Maui Information - Maui County Information

In 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state of the union. Maui County includes the island of Maui as well as Lana'i, Moloka'i and the currently uninhabited island of Kaho'olawe. Maui is the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands, with 727 square miles of land and 120 linear miles of coastline.

Maui County Government

Maui County is represented in the state Senate by three senators and in the State House with representatives, one for each of the six districts. The Maui County council consists of six elected representatives, one for each council district.

Island Population and Ethnicity

The current population of Maui is about 138,000, the third largest island population in Hawaii. The Wailuku-Kahului communities have the island's greatest density of population with about 41,000 people. Upcountry, the population is just over 22,000 and the west side of the Island which has seen rapid growth in recent years is 24,000 and growing. About 24,000 make South Maui their home while around 10,000 live along the road to Hana and in Hana itself.

The ethnicity of Maui, like all of the Hawaii Islands, is diverse with 35 percent Caucasian, 31 percent Asian, 22 percent mixed ethnicity, 11 percent Hawaiian and 2 percent other ethnicities.

Land Ownership

Maui County includes 750,000 acres of land of which the Island Maui is 465,000. The federal government owns about 30,000 acres which consists of Haleakala National Park. The state of Hawaii owns around another 120,000 in forests and protected land holdings. There some large land holders in Maui and these include Amfac (Kaananapli Resort), Maui Land and Pineapple, Alexander and Baldwin Haleakala Ranch and Ulupalakua Ranch. On Molokai the largest land owner is Molokai Ranch which owns around a third of the Island. The entire island of Lanai (98 percent) is owned by Castle & Cook.
