Kahului

Kahului is Maui's main business community and also home to a quarter of Maui's population. It was an established sugar town by 1880, but did not really expand until the 1960's when Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Co. began building low-cost housing for workers. This new community was considered a model development for the whole United States.

Kahului's deep water harbor is the main port for all cruise ships and shipping of goods. The harbor is also used by the Kahului Hawaiian Canoe Club who frequent its protected waters for paddle practice. Kahului's airport which lies just outside the town, is the main airport for the island for inter-island and Mainland flights.

In recent years Kahului has acquired many well known stores making it the best general purpose shopping on the island. The Maui Arts and Cultural Center, located between Kahului and Wailuku, continues to play an important role on the island, bringing well-known national artists and musicians to Maui as well creating a world-class showcase for local artists and Hawaiian Cultural events.

Kahului Real Estate

There are numerous residential subdivisions that were built many years ago that are home to local working families. Homes here are more affordable than many areas of Maui ranging from $400,000 to the mid-$800’s. Newer subdivisions, some gated and some not, such as Grand Fairways, The Bluffs at Maui Lani or The Island at Maui Lani offer newer construction with elegant, up-scale living for under $1.5 million. The most recent addition to the Kahului residential real estate market is Sandhill Estates, also in the Maui Lani neighborhood. These homes will offer golf course living near or on The Dunes of Maui Lani.

Kahului certainly has something for everyone.

Kahului Weather

Kahului, like many of Maui's coastal communities, has near constant temperature broken into two distinct seasons, winter and summer. In winter, the daytime temperature ranges between 74 and 82 degrees. In the summer, temperatures rise to between 84 and 89 degrees. Near constant breezes help to cool the air and keep it clear and clean.

Beaches

Kahana Beach County Park

Just behind the airport lies Kahana Beach County Park, popular with expert and beginner windsurfers for the steady off-shore winds to be found there.

Kite Beach

A short way from Kahana Beach Park is Kite Park where the new and exciting extreme sport of kite-surfing is practiced. This sport can be breathtaking to watch and Kite Beach is the best place in the islands to view this new sport.
