1.Cabin Reservations in the Parks - Cabin reservations in the parks are highly sought after and usually take a year to get. Tip - call for cancellations. These are often available 3 weeks prior to the date you want. Wainapanapa State Park: (808) 984-8109. Haleakala National Park: (808) 572-4400.
2. Best Beach for Dogs - Baldwin Beach in Paia is a dogs' delights. Tip - remember to bring a leash (& a pooper-scooper!)
3. Moonlight Summer Hike in the Crater - For those of you who love the outdoors, hiking through the crater by moonlight can't be beat. Tip - best months July, August and September - bring warm clothes, rain jacket, water, sturdy shoes, snacks and flashlight.
4. Arari with your Popcorn - This local treat is an ono (delicious) Japanese snack. Tip - add to your popcorn - perfect for taking to the movies. Buy at the food store before going.
5. Maui Sierra Club Hikes - Shh! not really advertised much to keep the numbers down but Sierra Club Hikes are the best. Tip - Sierra Club Members pay $2 ($5 for non-members) to hike to remote waterfalls and pristine Hawaiian forests. Call (808) 573-4147.
6. Komoda's Bakery - Get there early - this local Makawao bakery is famous for its island style pastries. Tip - Don't miss the Malasadas! Ph: (808) 572-7261
7. Springtime in Kula - The Jacaranda trees are in full bloom, carpeting the hills and roads with their striking lavender blossoms. Tip - take a drive Upcountry - this is a sight not to be missed.
8. The Boo-Boo Zoo - Actually called the East Maui Animal Refuge, the B-B Zoo is located in Haiku and cares for Maui's orphaned and injured animals. Tip - if you ever find an animal in need this is the place to call: (808) 572-8308.
9. Makawao Rodeo - the largest rodeo in the state of Hawaii is held every fourth of July. Hawaiian cowboys and cowgirls (paniolos) come from all over the state to compete. Tip - grab your cowboy hat, get there early and have a good time.
10. The Fourth of July Parade - takes place in Makawao and celebrates the Paniolo spirit with decked out horses, riders and lots of good cheer. Tip - to find a good parking spot get there before 7am.
